Distinguished and Famous people from Dubbo
🏅 David Peachey
David Peachey came through the Dubbo Macquarie Raiders before developing a long rugby-league career with Cronulla. The Dubbo-born fullback became known for his running and creative play, represented New South Wales and received the Dally M fullback award in 1999. After football, his interests included mediation training through an Australian Disputes Centre scholarship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants. His story connects junior sport in Dubbo with both professional achievement and a later interest in helping communities resolve disputes.
🤝 Bill Reid
Bill Reid attended the Aborigines Progressive Association’s second conference at Dubbo as a Brewarrina delegate after encouragement from Bill Ferguson. Elected secretary, he helped recruit members and build support for Aboriginal rights. Later community work centred on Bourke, followed by a Commonwealth field-officer role and retirement activities that included language recovery and emu egg carving. Dubbo’s association is the documented conference and leadership milestone, not a residence inferred from his eventual hospital death there. It gives the city a specific place in the development of a widely respected Kamilaroi community worker.
🎙️ Bert Bryant
Bert Bryant was born at Dubbo in 1927 and wanted to call races from childhood. After leaving De La Salle College at fourteen, he persuaded the local radio manager to give him a trial; his first call was at nearby Geurie. Broadcasting later took him to Melbourne, where he called twenty-seven consecutive Melbourne Cups and became known for accuracy and comic turns of phrase. His path was not smooth: gambling debts and a youthful forgery conviction preceded that successful career. Dubbo’s connection includes school, ordinary weekday jobs and the local broadcasting chance that first put his ambition on air.
