Dubbo is a city in the Orana region of New South Wales, Australia. It is located approximately 400 kilometers north-west of the state capital, Sydney, and 400 kilometers south-west of Brisbane. Dubbo has a rich history, with evidence of Aboriginal occupation dating back at least 40,000 years. The first Europeans to explore the area were John Oxley and his party in 1818. They named the river they found the Macquarie River, after Governor Lachlan Macquarie. For the next few decades, the area remained largely untouched by Europeans, but there were occasional clashes with Aboriginal people. In the 1830s, squatters began to move into the area, taking up large tracts of land for grazing. The first major settlement in the area was Wellington, which was established in the 1840s. The town quickly became a hub of activity, with a post office, courthouse, police station, and other essential services. Dubbo itself was founded in 1849, when a reserve was set aside for a town site on the banks of the Macquarie River. The town quickly grew, and by the mid-1850s, it had a courthouse, police station, hospital, newspaper, and more. The railway arrived in 1881, further boosting Dubbo's growth. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Dubbo continued to thrive, with an agricultural-based economy and a population of around 10,000. In the 1920s, the city began to diversify, with an influx of industrial activity. The post-World War II period saw a surge in growth, with Dubbo becoming a regional center for education, health, and other services. Today, Dubbo is a thriving city with a population of approximately 38,000. It is home to attractions such as Taronga Western Plains Zoo, the Old Dubbo Gaol, and the Dubbo Observatory. It remains an important hub for the surrounding agricultural area, with a range of industries contributing to the local economy. Dubbo's history is an important part of the city's identity. The Dubbo and District Historical Society is a volunteer-run organization that works to preserve and share the region's history. The society operates a museum and research center, and regularly hosts talks, tours, and events. In addition to the historical society, there are a number of other organizations and attractions in Dubbo that showcase the region's rich history. The Dundullimal Homestead is a restored 19th-century homestead that offers a glimpse into rural life in the early days of European settlement. The Dubbo Regional Museum explores the region's cultural and natural history, with exhibits on everything from local Aboriginal culture to the city's industrial past. Dubbo has come a long way since its founding in the mid-19th century. But despite its growth and development, the city has managed to maintain its unique character and sense of history. Today, Dubbo is a vibrant and dynamic city that offers a wealth of opportunities for both residents and visitors alike.
